Teusink Community Garden

Long past are the days when people needed to plant their own food in order to sustain their families for months at a time. Now days, in order to get fruits and vegetables all we need to do is take a short drive to the produce section of our local supermarket. And the produce that is available to us no longer depends on what fruits or vegetables are in season. Even though we are not dependant on growing our own produce, many people are choosing to for both the financial and health benefits.

Community gardens are growing in popularity and now residents in the Virginia Park area have an opportunity to take part.

“Our garden started when Larry Teusink decided to donate the land for a garden. His plan was that this land would be available for people who needed (because of financial difficulty) or wanted to grow their own produce,” said Suzie Steen, Garden Administrator.

In addition to the health benefits of gardening and eating home-grown produce, there are other benefits as well.

“Larry also wanted this garden to be a place where the community could get to know each other better,” Suzie added.

The community garden is sectioned into 48 plots that are available for anyone living within a two mile radius of the garden. To find out if you would be eligible for a plot, check out the garden blog at teusinkneighborhoodgarden.wordpress.com/  The blog is full of other resources as well.

“We are very excited to see how quickly the garden has caught on. We have one Master Gardener and one gardener with 50 years of experience on board and they are ready to answer questions that are posted on the blog at any time,” said Suzie.

Currently, there are only about 10 plots left so if you’re interested in participating, check out the blog and/or contact Suzie Steen for further information.

I would think that the environmental benefits of eating local would be worth mentioning as well. So much of our produce travels 1000s of miles before it reaches our plate.
